strawberries

Allison wanted a garden. I wanted a garden. I wanted a garden like my friend has. A big raised bed garden with CROPS. I didn’t get my act together on that one, and June may be a bit late to start, but we did get a small whiskey barrel for Allison to plant some strawberries in…and guess what? We have green berries!! Very exciting. Allison is beyond thrilled. I was worried because two weeks ago, we got about 8 inches of unexpected snow, and I was worried about the strawberry plants surviving. We did loose a few, but most were fine!

I may still plant something small…maybe a big garden next year. I don’t have a green thumb. Maybe starting small is a better idea anyway.

  1. You would not believe this…… I’ve got WILD strawberries growing over at least one-third of my front yard! Yea, it’s just too bad that I mow them down every week or so!
I asked Jeri (Tim’s mom) to verify my identification of small red berries that were poping up all over my yard. (I wanted to know if they were poisoneous!) They didn’t look like strawberries, exactly. They are just small (smaller than a marble) roundish berries, with the bumpy, kinda seedy surface like strawberries have. She walked around our yard, in amazement, and agreed that they were actually strawberries!
So now, I think I’ll just fence off most of my front yard, let it grow wild, and profess that I am harvesting strawberries!! Oklahoma heat had begun to make mowing our lawn a bit tiresome! So I’ll just let it grow!!!!! ~Debbi

  2. That is so cool! Allison is thrilled beyond belief with her strawberry garden. One of the berries is even starting to redden up a bit this morning.

If you have tons, remember strawberries freeze well and frozen, they work great in smoothies (says she who is sipping a strawberry smoothy at the moment..got a bunch on sale and froze most of them for smoothies…since they don’t keep long in the fridge)
